The US$20M NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE is a global initiative operated by the XPRIZE Foundation, designed to accelerate new technologies by converting CO2 emissions from industrial facilities for electricity generation and oil and gas production into valuable and usable products.
The Carbon XPRIZE is structured as a two-track prize with new technologies tested using emissions from either a coal power plant or a natural gas power plant. A total of US$20M will be awarded to winning teams, split equally between each track.
All the technologies being pursued have the potential to transform how the world approaches CO2 mitigation across a variety of sectors, industrial processes, and consumer products.
The 10 finalists in the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE hail from five countries.
Since 1994, the nonprofit XPRIZE Foundation has designed and operated seventeen competitions in the domain areas of Space, Oceans, Learning, Health, Energy, Environment, Transportation, Safety and Robotics.
Each of these prizes has created an industry-changing technology that brings us closer to a better, safer, more sustainable world.
The NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE has two co-title sponsors: NRG and Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance.
Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA) is an alliance of oil sands producers focused on accelerating environmental performance improvement in Canada’s oil sands through collaborative action and innovation.
NRG, America’s largest and most diverse competitive power company, creates value through reliable and efficient conventional generation while driving innovation in renewable power, electric vehicle ecosystems, and carbon capture.
