Carbon Upcycling is working with Newlight Technologies to transform the waste carbon emissions of today into the building materials of tomorrow.
For Carbon Upcycling, CO2 isn’t just one of the world’s greatest problems—it’s one of the best solutions. With their fresh perspective, Carbon Upcycling partnered with Newlight Technologies after becoming an NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE finalist.
At the core of the team’s technology is a vision for transforming CO2 into the base materials for a wide range of products, ranging from batteries to plastics to concrete. With the support and amplification of the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE, Carbon Upcycling is demonstrating the potential of their technology and showing exactly what a carbon negative future could look like at scale.
Carbon Upcycling uses a unique process to react waste with CO2 with solid feedstocks such as graphite, petcoke, and fly ash. This creates stable, solid nanoparticles that can then be added to a wide variety of materials in order to make these materials stronger or more efficient. In practice, this has been used to create enhanced concrete, plastics, ceramic and epoxy coatings, adhesives, 3D printing filaments, pharmaceutical drugs and lubrication.
