Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA)

COSIA is an alliance of oil sands producers focused on accelerating improvement in environmental performance in Canada’s oil sands through collaborative action and innovation.

To create the breakthroughs needed, we bring together industry, government, academia and innovators—all working to decrease emissions, reduce water usage and reclaim land faster. We do this through research, technology and by providing support for exciting new ideas—including those in the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE.

Environmental Innovation in Action

When launched in 2012, COSIA was considered one of the most unique models of open innovation and collaboration in the world. This is Canadian innovation at work and environmental leadership in action.

Since 2012, through COSIA, our members have invested $1.6 billion to develop over 1,000 technologies. Many of the solutions we’re helping to advance, like those in the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE, are not unique to just the oil sands, having potential for positive global impact.

COSIA Focus Areas

Our vision is broad and ambitious. That’s why we’ve developed a plan to achieve it with a series of focus areas and goals:

Greenhouse Gases

From the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE to other potential game-changers, we aspire to enable energy production from Canada’s oil sands with lower greenhouse gas emissions than any other source of oil.

Land

Our prosperity comes from the land, and we’re focused on our responsibility to become world leaders in land management, restoring the land and preserving biodiversity of plants and animals.

Tailings

We see opportunity where others see challenge. That’s why we aspire to transform tailings from waste into a resource that speeds land and water reclamation.

Water

Water is essential to life and is one of our primary focuses as we work to become world leaders in water management, producing Canadian energy with no adverse impact on water.

COSIA Members

COSIA members represent more than 90 per cent of oil sands production and are collaboratively working to make Canadian energy part of a sustainable environment.
